What does insomnia mean
When you hear the term insomnia,the next question that you will ask is:what does insomnia mean?. Insomnia is a disorder related to sleep.People with this condition find it difficult to sleep.They also stay awake for long during normal sleeping hours.A person with this disorder is not able to sleep for adequate amount of time and they usually complain of feeling tried or dizzy during the day.This is one of the most common sleep disorders.
Types of insomnia
There are two types of Insomnia.The first type is referred to as acute insomnia.This is when you have the sleep disorder for only hours to a few days.The other type is referred to as chronic insomnia.The chronic type is when you the disorder persists for around one month or more.There are different causes of this disorder.
1.Medications.There are many kinds of medications that lead to this diorder, like those used for heart conditions,high blood pressure,pain, and those used for managing depression among others.People who are in continuous use of drugs are more prone to insomnia that those who do not.The elderly are a category of people who develop this condition due to the continuous use of drugs to manage and treat diseases and medical conditions that are associated with old age.
2. Inactivity.People with lifestyles that are not active are also at a risk of developing this sleep disorder.Exercise is an activity that enable one to have quality sleep.People who exercise regularly hardly develop insomnia.The elderly and people who are immobilized have higher chances of developing this disorder.This is beacuse they are less active during the day and also due to the fact that they may sleep during the day and thus they may not get adequate sleep at night.
3.Stress and depression.These two can lead to the development of this disorder.If one is stressed due to family or work related issues, they may find themselves having interrupted sleep.Loss of a loved one, medical conditions, divorce or any other related factor can lead to insomnia.A depressed person may sleep for long hours or fail to get enough sleep.This is a mental disorder and it may be characterized by insomnia.
4.Taking alcohol, caffeine or nicotine.
These three can lead to episodes of lack of adequate sleep.Taking beverages that contain caffeine later in the day can affect your sleep pattern.Alcohol on the other hand leads to short sleep cycles and one keeps on waking up after a few moments of sleep.
Treatment and prevention
1.Exercise is recommended for those who do not have an active lifestyle.
2.If it has been caused by stress address the root cause of stress.This applies to other causes too.
3.Moderation in alcohol consumption.Also avoid taking beverages that contain caffeine and nicotine later in the day.
4.Avoid sleeping during the day for better sleep in the night.
5.Seek medical help if it persists.
